After last year's Snowpocalypse  in Texas, most of us are good to be without a snow day for a long, long time. However, kids will be kids and they are still wishing for a snow day.

Since we had some time this week due to a short week due to MLK Jr. Day and taking two days for COVID, we've spent the last two days digging in a little deeper to SNOW!

We extended our learning of poetry last week to this week with a simple narrative poem about a rare snow day for a kid in the south. While its not the real thing, students enjoyed reading the poem.

After doing a teacher guided walked through of the poem on day 1, we spent day 2 answering the 10 questions that went along with the poem. All 10 questions were styled as questions that you would see on standardized assessments. When I made the questions, I did this on purpose--we need all the practice we can get at these type of formal questions. Also, when we went to answer these questions, I did a teacher think aloud so that students could see my thoughts as I would consider the answers to the questions. I didn't give away the answers, but I did give away my thoughts. For the most part, this was very successful, but we continue to struggle with high level vocabulary, so this let's me know we need to work on our context clues and dictionary skills.

Once we finished the poem, we pulled out the art supplies and crafted. We practiced our fine motor skills and coloring by making tie-dye snowflakes. This year especially I have found it important for my 4th graders to practice these skills.
