Ahhh, love is in the air! Valentine's Day is almost upon us and is guaranteed to reek havoc upon any elementary school classroom. It's a day filled with chocolate, candy, and cards as well as sugar highs and crazy behavior... Sound right?

We don't do parties for Valentine's Day at my campus--don't get me wrong, we still celebrate by passing out Valentine's and having some treats, but we don't stop instruction.

Enter bringing the kitchen into the classroom. Instead of our typical curriculum that day, I bring out a delectable treat and an informational reading passage. We read about the history of Valentine's Day and then we make a sweet trail mix treat.

What I love about this activity is that it covers ALL of the curriculum! We've got math through measurement, history and reading through the reading passage, and science because we will discuss how this becomes a mixture and not a solution. We also bring the kitchen into the classroom by using measuring spoons and reading recipes.

It is also a great cooperative learning activity. This really takes some team work!

You can grab measuring cups here or at your local dollar store. I grabbed mine from Dollar Tree and they have held up for years!

Grab the reading passage and recipe here. It'll be on sale in my tpt store 20% off today and tomorrow. Get an extra 5% off with code FEBSALE22 at checkout.
